Fennec – Firefox for Mobile is Out!

Lately, a lot of buzz has been created by Mozilla’s latest Firefox browser for mobile, code-named “Fennec”. Their first alpha version has been released intended specifically for developers, none the less the general public can also give it a test run.

This release is intended for the OS2008 (”Maemo”) software platforms that runs on the Nokia N800 and Nokia N810 Internet Tablets.

If you do not owe Nokia N800 or Nokia N810, there is nothing to worry about, you can still try it on Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X by downloading it from the link provided at the end of this post.

It works on the same principle as the desktop version of Firefox and uses the same HTML rendering engine, “Gecko“. Mozilla did not even mention any plans for Symbian or J2ME versions of Firefox Mobile browser. But a Windows Mobile version is in development which will be available later this year.

Despite it being very early in the testing stages, the Fennec browser is already showing major performance gains. Although Firefox enthusiasts may be tempted to try out Fennec now, they should be warned that much of the new browser’s functionality isn’t seen via the UI just yet – it’s all very much still “under the hood.”

The Firefox team is expecting to get a wider community feedback possible.
