How To Open Multiple Home Pages in Firefox Simultaneously?

This is perhaps the best feature I have found inside Firefox. Firefox has this unique ability to open multiple home pages simultaneously on the same window through separate tabs.

I find this trick quite useful and time saving, because it allows me to open all the needed pages at the same time, without having to enter the URL in the address bar separately.

Okay I’ll stop babbling and tell you how to apply this trick to your desktop.

1. Open your Firefox browser

2. Go to Tools->Options.

3. Click on the ‘Main‘ tab. Reference screen shot below.

4. Now is the tough part. Be attentive. Type any number of URL’s inside the ‘Home Page’ each followed with a ‘ | ‘ (excluding quotes). You will find this key some where above your return or enter key.

5. Click OK and your done! Now every time you open Firefox all these tabs will open at once.

There is another thing that you can also apply; if for instance you have opened 2-3 pages on firefox and want to make them your default home page, simply go to Options and click the “Use Current Pages” button. All your opened pages will now work as bookmarks every time you start firefox.

Automatically Save Download Files From Firefox To Desired Location Via Automatic Save Folder

Have you ever thought how useful add-ons or plug-ins are? They can simplify a lot of your work and all you have to do is to download them on to your system. There are over tons of Firefox add-ons that helps you in every way possible; for instance you can find add-ons for torrents, etc etc.

Usually, when ever you download your files to your computer, you are prompted to save your files to a desired location each time you click on the download link.

This can become very tedious as you will have to sort all the files manually and if the number of downloaded files is very large you will have to face difficulty locating and rearranging them. This is where you should give Automatic Save Folder a try.

As the name implies Automatic save folder is a Firefox add-on that will automatically save all your downloaded files to your desired locations that you have set, based on the type of file that you have downloaded.

For instance; if you were to download any .exe files, you will make a separate folder named ‘Applications’ etc and that file will be saved at that particular location. Like wise you can make other folders for each file type you want to.

Get rid of Toolbar Notes in Firefox

I have seen people, though less in number who dislike floating boxes that provide you with help and/or information when ever you hover your mouse over them.

For example, if you hover you mouse over the refresh/reload button, a small box will appear displaying ‘Reload’. Some people argue as to why this message should appear in the first place, if you already know what that button is for.

If you are among those people who don’t want to see this message ever again. Simple follow the instruction as mentioned below:

1. Open Firefox, and in the address bar type: about:config

2. A warning will pop-up, click ‘I promise, I will be careful‘

3. Now in the search bar, enter the following command:

browser.chrome.toolbar_tips

4. By default you will see value as ‘True‘; you need to set this value to ‘False‘.

5. Close Firefox for changes to take place.

Now you won’t have to worry about any pop ups appearning while you hover your mouse over buttons, etc. If you are having trouble figuring this one out, check out this video.

Faster Refreshing for Live Bookmarks in Firefox

Do you know how much time does Firefox takes to refresh live bookmarks? Yesterday, I asked some of my friends and about 80% of them said that it takes roughly 30-35 minutes. Well my friends; you are wrong!!

By default Firefox takes 60 minutes (3600 seconds) to refresh its live bookmarks that you previously saved. Now comes another interesting question. Can you reduce or increase the refreshing time? The answer is YES!

So how to set your own time to make the process a bit faster? Here’s how…

1. Open Firefox, and in the address bar, type ‘about:config’

2. A warning will pop-up and click on ‘I promise, I will be careful‘ button.

3. Now in the preference section; right click your mouse button then go to New -> Integer

4. A new window will pop up. Here type the following:

browser.bookmarks.livemark_refresh_seconds

5. Now comes the tough part. Don’t worry, it’s now that hard; you will have to set your own value, which is in seconds. As I already said, the default value is set to 3600 seconds (60 minutes). Change it to anywhere from 60-3600 seconds.

6. Click OK button and reset firefox for changes to take effect.

How to Spell Check for All Text Areas in Firefox

Ahhh…! I have always been bad in spellings. It always horrified me when ever I was down to write something over the internet. I know I could have searched for spelling tools that would help me while I was writing.

But before I could search any other tool, I found a very useful technique already available in Firefox. I wonder why Firefox has disabled it by default, never the less, I found this tweak very simple and easy to apply.

If you are a bad speller like me, then you should definitely turn on Firefox’s spelling checker. Here is how I did it:

1. Open Firefox, and in the address bar type: about:config
2. Click on ‘I promise, I will be careful‘ button and move on,
3. In the filter bar, type the following carefully;

layout.spellcheckDefault

4. By default the value is set to ‘1‘. You will have to double click the value and change it to ‘2‘.
5. Restart Firefox for changes to take effect.

Voila! Now you won’t have to worry about misspellings anymore.

How to Launch Firefox Instantly?

Does your Firefox take too much time to load? By loading we mean that it takes a lot of time to open when you click the Firefox button. Now the question arises; how to launch Firefox instantly?

Bradblogging.com has shared a very useful tip that enables you to launch Firefox completely with in 3-5 seconds, instead of 15-20 seconds in our case.

Simple hover to this page, where you will find a .exe file.

Download that file.
Install it on your computer.
Enjoy!

Basically, it is a Firefox Preloader that is designed to load parts of Mozilla Firefox into memory before it is used to improve the its start up time.

Note: Do note that it will work more efficiently on systems with a bigger RAM.

Optimize Firefox for Broadband users | How To

Did you know that Firefox by default is optimized for Dial up users? But even dial up users can further enhance their browsing speed to up to 150 times its normal by tweaking it. However, if you have given up using dial up and now use DSL, then you will need to change some of the settings to make it work for DSL connections.

Before we begin, you’ll need to make a back up of your Firefox’s registry. Here is how you back up your registry in Firefox:

FireFox Registry Back up

First, Close Firefox, select Start, Run (just Start in Vista), type %appdata%mozillafirefoxprofiles, and press Enter. The resulting Windows Explorer window will contain a folder with a very strange name, like ’4hw0enat.default’ – see screen shot.

Open that folder, and then copy the file prefs.js to a safe location.

Optimization for Broadband Connections

Once you have safely backed up Firefox registry. Open Firefox and press ALT+D (more Firefox shortcut keys here) to place the cursor in the address bar.

Enter about:config and press Enter. Then enter network.http.pipelining or simply copy paste it in the filter bar. Set its value to True ( see screen-shot).

Next, enter network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to bring up the ‘Enter integer value’ dialog box. You will see a value of 4 by default; enter a higher number than 4; 15 should work. Press Enter.

The last thing that you will need to do it to enter a string text by right-Click anywhere then click ‘Create New’ and then select ‘Integer‘. Name it ‘nglayout.initialpaint.delay‘ – see screen shot. Next set this to ‘0‘ (Zero) and press enter.

Restart Firefox. Re-open it and experience the difference your self!

For the past few weeks, we have been discussing firefox more than ever before. The reason behind this is that Firefox is one of the most powerful browser ever developed. You can find tons of add-ons and tools that contribute to make your life even more simpler on Firefox. You can even tweak and tune Firefox to optimize its performance.

Having said all that, it’s not easier for most users, especially for newbies to play with Firefox’s about:config panel. You need to know a lot more when it comes to optimizing it manually.

If you type inside your firefox address bar: about:config you will see a huge list of commands that can not be understood without having proper know how as to what they might do if you tamper with them. A useful tool that we have come across recently allows you to see these commands in a Graphical user interface (GUI) manner.

Basically, its a Firefox extension, called gui:config; and what this tool does is that it presents the content i.e different types of commands; in a user friendly way, dividing it into different tabs and sections, thus specifically telling you what each function is about and what it will do if you change its values. Similarly, it displays the options, included in the current version, using check boxes, drop down lists and text boxes.

Adjust Number Of Suggestions & Scrolling Tabs

In this week we posted some tweaks about Firefox that included an insight to Firefox’s tabs, how to back up registry and order bookmarks in Firefox, plus we also showed you how to disable time delay when installing a new add-on onto your system.

Today we bring two new trick that will surely help you in browsing and will also ease your way further. First up is how to adjust the number of suggestions that Firefox displays when ever you type in a keyword in the address bar. After that we will show you how to adjust the number of tabs on each Firefox window.

I hate to say this again and again, but if you don’t think you are confident enough then please make sure you make a copy of the registry before you move on.

Adjust the Number of Suggestions

Open Firefox, in the address bar type: about:config press Enter. In the Filter box, enter the following: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults

By default you will see a value of ’12′. Adjust this value accordingly. Restart Firefox and you will see the changes.

Adjust Scrolling Tabs

Some times when you are searching something you have to open more than one or two tabs in Firefox. Firefox will keep on shrinking the size of the tabs each time you open a new one, but once that limit is reached you will see a scrolling bar enabling you to move between tabs. On your screen each tab by default will have a size of 100 px, but that can be adjusted as well.

If you don’t any scroll bar and want to see all the tab on your screen at a given time, you will need to set this value to ‘0‘ (Zero). Here is how you do this.

Type inside the Filter box: browser.tabs.tabMinWidth and set the value to ‘0‘ or if you don’t want this you can adjust the size of each tab by lowering the value, thus giving more room for each tab to appear on your current screen.

7 Firefox Features You May Not Know

Ever though why everyone praises Firefox? Why is it spreading like wild fire? They reason lies in its simplicity; Firefox offers some of the greatest features that no browser has ever come up with; you have already witnessed an insight in Tabs here on skidzopedia, further more some of the greatest tips, tricks and themes are being shared with you from time to time.

Regardless to that there are some features that you may not have come across. Today, we will unveil 7 Firefox 3 features that will make you fell in love with this awesome browser even further.

1. Re-size the search bar

When the search bar is placed next to the location bar, you can drag the handler between them (invisible on Windows and Linux) to re-size it.

2. Integrated add-ons

No need to visit Mozilla Add-ons because Firefox 3 brings it to you directly from the Add-ons Manager new Get Add-ons page: search, find and install with a single click.

3. Check your crashes

Type about:crashes in the address bar to get a list of crashes submitted by Mozilla’s crash reporter called Breakpad. Click on a crash report to get details provided by Socorro, Mozilla’s crash reports server.

4. Disable plug-ins

If you Firefox is crashing without any reason; one of the reasons can be due to a faulty plug-in. To be sure, disable the suspect through the new Plugins page in the Add-ons Manager from the Tool menu.

5. Duplicate Tabs

If you want to create a duplicate tab of the same page, press CTRL while dragging a tab. Please note that this feature is only for Window users and will not work on Mac.

6. Move tabs to another window

Just drag a tab and drop it on another window to move it. If the dragged tab is the last one in its window, it will be closed.

7. Discontinuous selections

Make a selection with the mouse as you usually do. Then press and hold the CTRL (for Windows only) key to make additional selections and create a larger discontinuous one so you can copy or print just what you need.

Disable Delay Time When Installing Add-on | Firefox Tips

I am in a bad habit of installing many add-ons on my computer and it really agitates me when ever I have to wait for several seconds before the installation begins.

If you too are tired of waiting before the installation of the timer begins, then this tweak will enable you to get ride of that timer in no time. Here is how you do it, but before you begin make sure you made a back up of your registry, to make sure you are on the safe side.

Open your browser; i.e Firefox and type the following: about:config press Enter. In the same window type the following inside the Filter box: security.dialog_enable_delay.

Set the default value of ‘2000‘ to ‘0‘ (as illustrated above). Close Firefox for the changes to take effect and re-open it again. Now you won’t have to wait for the installation to start. Enjoy!

Hide/Show Close Button On Tabs | Firefox Tips

Although this trick won’t be appreciated by many of our readers, but keeping in mind that there are people who can’t tolerate a Close Button (black X) on every tab. What ever may be the reason; we bring you a very simple trick that will enable you to get rid of this cross in no time!

Before we move on, Make a back up of the Firefox’s registry in case anything goes wrong. Here is how you make a back up. If you already know or don’t want to use this tweak, then take a look at our Firefox tips, here.

Once you have made the backup, go to the address bar, type in about:config click on ‘I’ll be careful, I promise!‘ button and then type browser.tabs.closeButtons.

By default the value is set to 1, you can change it from value ( 0-3) as mentioned below.

0 – display a close button on the active tab only
1- display close buttons on all tabs
2- don’t display any close buttons
3- display a single close button at the end of the tab strip

How To Bring Order to Your Bookmarks | FireFox Tips

Yesterday, we covered Firefox’s Tab – if you have missed that post take a look. Today, we will discuss about FireFox bookmarks. If you are in a habit of creating a lot of bookmarks but don’t get the time to keep them in an organize manner. This means that you will have as much difficulty in finding bookmarked pages as with unbookmarked pages.

Let us show you how to keep your bookmarks in an organized manner. Make Folders or categories where you keep your releted bookmarks. For instance, I place tech sites in a folder called ‘Technology’.

To organize your bookmarks, select Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks to open the Bookmarks Manager. Here you can create new folders, drag bookmarks to new locations, and make other changes.

When ever you come across a new page and want to bookmark it for future references, then select Bookmarks, Bookmark This Page, or press Ctrl+D keys. In the resulting Add Bookmarks dialog box, click the ‘Create in’ menu’s down arrow to see a list of folders into which you’ve recently placed new bookmarks.

If you haven’t created a folder to place your bookmark yet then click the down arrow to the far right of the ‘Create in’ option. This expands the Add Bookmark dialog box, allowing you to select any folder, or to create a new one. Click OK when you are done.

How to Access and Backup Firefox Registry

Lately, we were getting many mails to teach you how to make a backup of your Firefox’s registry. Here is a quick tutorial on how to access and then make a back up of your Firefox registry, in case you want to make some changes to your Firefox registry.

Open your Firefox browser and press ALT+D, type in the address bar: about:config and press Enter. You will be given a warning, simply click on ‘I’ll be Careful I promise!‘ button to proceed.

You will see different entries that you can modify by double clicking on them. You can make changes to any of these files, but before that don’t forget to make a back up of your registry.

An Insight on FireFox’s Tabs | FireFox Tips

Today, we will take a look at Firefox‘s most appreciated feature; i.e the ability to view multiple pages by clicking the tab. You don’t necessarily have to click your mouse when ever you want to open a new tab, but instead you can use a combination of CTRL+T keys from your keyboard – a new blank window will be opened with the cursor in the address bar.

Further more you can manually set whether to launch a page in a tab or in a new window whenever you click on them. To do this open your browser, go to Tools -> Options and from there click on Tabs then choose according to your desire to open it in a new window or a new tab and click OK – see screenshot.

Now if you want to move between Tabs without the aid of your mouse, press CTRL+TAB keys to move towards right or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB key to move backwards. You can even re-order your tabs by dragging them with your mouse.

To close the tab that your are on, press CTRL+W key to close it and in case you accidentally closed a tab that you didn’t want to close then use CTRL+SHIFT+T to re-open the same page in that tab.
