Technology is always pushing the boundaries for the best digital cameras and with current developments working on screen resolution, flexible screens and attractive accessories and gadgets, the future for digital cameras is only really just starting. Screen resolution has always been an issue with digital cameras and the screen size for compact cameras has often been grainy and does not allow the user to objectively look and assess the quality of the image ‘in situ’. This means having to wait until the image is downloaded to a laptop or a PC, which may be too late to allow for the shot to be retaken.

The ability of manufacturers to create higher screen resolutions has been possible since the LED and LCD technology first began to appear. Most of the best digital cameras have screen resolutions that are far below their image and there has to be a compromise between the space taken up for the screen and the other function buttons. Soon most cameras will have a touch interface and be quite similar to many smart phones but for now, the interactivity that users request is still present and for some, the pleasure of taking a photograph is being in control of the ‘physical’ buttons.

Having more memory slots for a range of memory cards is also becoming an advantage for storing and transporting images and the ability to connect wireless or via blue tooth is going to be an exciting time for photojournalists and amateurs alike.

Lens technology is never too far behind camera technology and the newest range of lenses from the major manufacturers are appearing to have good reviews. The Nikon AF 28 – 300mm lens is a new generation of all in one lens that covers the best range for most users and includes a high
focus telephoto focal length of up to 300mm which means super sharp and up close images can be captured from a good distance. Not only is the quality of the lens improving but the range of applications that lens can add to cameras is also advancing. The Panasonic 12.5mm f/12 Lumix 3D lens is the start of some exciting new approaches to photography. The requirement of a 3D TV and glasses is essential but as this technology becomes more common place and cheaper, the availability of these devices will grow and cameras will be sold with more and more of these added features.

For the compact digital cameras the multi function ability has always been a main part of the camera. However, for DSLR cameras, the ability for video capture has always been there with the very expensive models, but as the combined technology begins to filter down into the DSLR mid price ranges, more models will have the multi function capabilities and provide a photographer with greater opportunities to record their world around them digitally.
