How to Change Some Files in your Hosting Account from Read and Write to Read Only so Your Files are Hack Proof

There are a million and one ways in which you can get hacked and even if you apply every single defense you can think about, there is no guarantee that your hosting account and the sites you host are safe. However, this doesn’t mean that there are no little steps you can (and should) take in order to defend your sites from hackers. Hosting nerds know many useful tricks and one of them is how to change some files in your hosting account from Read and Write to Read-only.

If you aren’t a hosting nerd, maybe you are wondering why you should bother changing file permissions. The answer is easy – because when your files can be modified (i.e. when you have enabled the Write permission for them), this is a security risk.
Not all files in your cpanel hosting account are subject to the same risk level and this why you need to know which files are to be modified. There are files, which are more important than others and which are easier to modify to include malicious code in them. When a hacker gets hold of such a file, he or she can add a virus code. Later on, when somebody loads your page in his or her browser, his or her computer will get infected – this is the way viruses are distributed all over the Net.

Which Files Need a Special Protection?

There isn’t a universal prescription which files need to be protected but generally the list includes host’s file, or a file with access permissions, such as the .htaccess file in your cpanel account. Files with hardcoded usernames and passwords for database access are also very vulnerable.

In addition to them, database files (i.e. those files with an .mdb extension) and .txt files are also a lucrative target for a hacker. Finally, one more group of files in need of special protection are .config files. .config files store different kinds of configuration settings and if such a file is hacked, this could cause a lot of problems for you. This is why you need to make .config files read-only as well.

How to Make Files Read-only

The exact way in which you can change a file from Read and Write to Read-only varies depending on the operating system your website hosting provider uses. Basically, if your website hosting uses cpanel hosting, you need to log in first and then you can make any changes.

If the operating system of your hosting provider is UNIX, you can change permissions with the chmod command. You can change permissions only for files you are the owner of. 777 permissions are to be avoided for any file with important data.

If your website hosting provider uses Windows and IIS, then you can change permissions to Read-only from File Manager and Explorer. You need to know that when you set permissions for a folder with subfolders, the permissions are automatically inherited – i.e. all the subfolders and the files in them inherit the permissions for the parent folder but if you need to set specific permissions for an individual files, you can do it.

How To Test your Anti-Virus Software?

There are tonnes of free antivirus applications available on the internet and each of them claims to detect and remove malicious viruses from your computer. Generally, most of these softwares are available for free; but despite their claims to protect your PC, usually they are worthless. Unless you buy premium antivirus applications such kaspersky, Mcafee, ESET, etc, you won’t be 100% sure whether you are being protected by the malicious viruses or not.

However, there is one simple test to verify whether your free anti virus program is upto its mark or not. In this tutorial we will teach you how to create a fake (dummy) virus and then run it on your system to see if your antivirus detects anything or not. Here is what you have to do;

1. Go to Notepad and open it,

2. Copy paste the following code onto your notepad,

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

3. Save the file on the desktop (or any other directory you like) with the file any file name you like, for instance; fakevirus.txt. The file that you have just created is actually an EICAR test file, developed by the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, to test the response of computer antivirus programs.

4. Now re-open the file. If your anti-virus displays a warning sign and closes the text file, then rest assured that it is working fine. Here is what my antivirus – kaspersky – displayed when it detected this file and neutrallized it.

Do you work on a shared computer? Does your family members or friends have the access to log in to your computer and see your personal files that for some reason you don’t want them to know?

If you are concerned about the security of your private files then you should give this handy tool, called ‘1 second Folder Encrypt‘ a shot. What this freeware does is that it will lock any of your desired folder, so that no one has the privilege to access it without your information. Now the question is how do you prevent someone from accessing your personal stuff using 1 second Folder Encrypt? Its pretty simple and straight forward.

I will assume that you have downloaded and installed the application from the link provided below. When you will click on the icon for the first time, it will prompt you to enter and set a new password that will be used each time you want to access the program.

Be careful and chose your password wisely. Simply, select any specific folders that you would like to encrypt by ticking on the ‘Encrypt’ box followed by entering ‘Start’ button. Whenever you decide to decrypt the folder at later stage, just repeat the same step but this time ticking on the ‘Decrypt’ box to decrypt it.

One more thing that I would like to add here is that any one accessing your computer can easily recognize the file/folder that you have encrypted as the folder name will end with a period i.e ‘.’ but there is no way they can have access to the original content, unless they have the right password.

Another thing that should be kept in mind while using this software is to close the application or else other unauthorized person will have chance to access it without the need to enter password, since the password is only required whenever it is launched.

Keepass – Remembers Passwords so you don’t have to!

While using the internet you have to manage alot of email accounts, ftp and bank accounts, social networks, messaging services and many more. Assuming that you have registered a same ID for all the above accounts. But are you using the same password? Perhaps not and you shouldn’t do, aswell. Memorizing all those different passwords can give you a head-ache.

But there is a better solution. KeePass is a free password manager which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way.
