If you run a small business or rely on your computer to get work done, having a good content management system is as essential as having a good computer, a quality Internet connection, and Wired Routers. This is especially the case for small businesses who already have a lot to think about. You don’t want to waste a lot of time trying to run a site with a huge backlog of data that is cluttering up your hard drive. Using content management software (CMS) is the best way to take a lot of the stress and headaches out of getting the job done.

Makes Your Life A Lot Easier

If you’re not completely sure what content management software is, it’s basically a web-based resource that gives anyone including web developers, bloggers, and businesses the ability to easily maintain the content of a web site. The reason why it’s so useful is because, unlike hand-coding and web developers, once these systems are set in place, there’s very little programming knowledge that is required in order to maintain a website’s content or functionality. Content is basically any information that you need to keep a business going. The applications are many.

Time Saving And Cost Effective

When you get a CMS, it’s going to cost you up front. You won’t realize it at first, but what you’re gaining is long-term money savings. When you get one of these systems, you’re able to streamline the way you do business and do the work of several people. Many CMS systems have tons of built-in features that will allow you to create an efficient filing system, give you improved access, and keep your business running smooth. When you have a CMS built into your site or computer, you get constant updates to the system. If you higher a web designer to make these changes, you’ll have to pay for every time an update is made. This way, you know exactly what you need and how much it will cost.

Improved Security

We’re hearing every day in the news that another company has been hacked and their users’ information has been compromised. Also, viruses have a habit of wiping systems totally clean or infecting important data. When you use a CMS system, you’re getting a program that is constantly being tested and updated to safeguard your precious information against hackers and viruses. Even if something does happen, all of your information is stored remotely so you never have to worry about losing anything.

It’s the best way to operate because you need to operate with maximum profits with the minimum costs. Getting quality CMS doesn’t have to cost you a fortune and the benefits far outweigh the costs. Doing this will give you more time to focus on your company or other concerns rather than spending half your day looking for a file.

There are five critical areas involving business email that can be threatening to a business; these include:

1. Storage

When using an on-site email solution, as your email volume grows and users begin generating more messages per day, as well as email with large attachments, your server needs more storage capacity.

2. Costs

With conventional email, up-front costs are often high. A server capable of handing email software, volume, and traffic is required, and can be costly. Licenses, maintenance, software, additional storage, and equipment failure can all be expensive.

3. Time-consumption

On-site email systems can take days or weeks to properly setup and configure. After deployment, the time and cost to implement and manage backups and restores can be overwhelming and expensive. With on-site email systems, the IT department is responsible for maintaining the email server, storage, software, backup systems, upgrades and patches, backups, and availability of email.

4. IT Expertise

When your agency email goes down, your IT department has to get it back up and running as soon as possible. This can often take hours to troubleshoot. Email software and hardware can be complicated and require IT staff to be continually trained.

5. Scalability

When your business grows, your computer network infrastructure must also grow. In-house email requires planning and budgeting to purchase more software or servers.

Dell Microsoft exchange is a large scale server solution for company-wide cloud email. Email has become the easiest system to move to the cloud. What is cloud email? It is an email service that runs your email system on its servers, while providing security, software updates, and more.

Storage with cloud-based email offers the latest and greatest technology with huge amounts of storage. Cloud-based solutions offer predictable pricing, often per month and per user; this eliminates expensive up-front equipment and depreciation. There are no initial upfront costs related to infrastructure, hardware, licensing, or ongoing information technology costs. Deployment of cloud-based solutions is much faster than on-site solutions; there is no hardware or software to install since services are provided via the Internet.

Dell Microsoft Exchange is a cloud-based messaging system that offers high availability to customers. This system offers secure and reliable infrastructure and redundancy. Cloud-based email solutions let your IT department focus on growing the business and other strategic tasks instead of maintenance. Shift the IT burden of maintaining email to Microsoft Exchange by Dell.

There are a million and one ways in which you can get hacked and even if you apply every single defense you can think about, there is no guarantee that your hosting account and the sites you host are safe. However, this doesn’t mean that there are no little steps you can (and should) take in order to defend your sites from hackers. Hosting nerds know many useful tricks and one of them is how to change some files in your hosting account from Read and Write to Read-only.

If you aren’t a hosting nerd, maybe you are wondering why you should bother changing file permissions. The answer is easy – because when your files can be modified (i.e. when you have enabled the Write permission for them), this is a security risk.
Not all files in your cpanel hosting account are subject to the same risk level and this why you need to know which files are to be modified. There are files, which are more important than others and which are easier to modify to include malicious code in them. When a hacker gets hold of such a file, he or she can add a virus code. Later on, when somebody loads your page in his or her browser, his or her computer will get infected – this is the way viruses are distributed all over the Net.

Which Files Need a Special Protection?

There isn’t a universal prescription which files need to be protected but generally the list includes host’s file, or a file with access permissions, such as the .htaccess file in your cpanel account. Files with hardcoded usernames and passwords for database access are also very vulnerable.

In addition to them, database files (i.e. those files with an .mdb extension) and .txt files are also a lucrative target for a hacker. Finally, one more group of files in need of special protection are .config files. .config files store different kinds of configuration settings and if such a file is hacked, this could cause a lot of problems for you. This is why you need to make .config files read-only as well.

How to Make Files Read-only

The exact way in which you can change a file from Read and Write to Read-only varies depending on the operating system your website hosting provider uses. Basically, if your website hosting uses cpanel hosting, you need to log in first and then you can make any changes.

If the operating system of your hosting provider is UNIX, you can change permissions with the chmod command. You can change permissions only for files you are the owner of. 777 permissions are to be avoided for any file with important data.

If your website hosting provider uses Windows and IIS, then you can change permissions to Read-only from File Manager and Explorer. You need to know that when you set permissions for a folder with subfolders, the permissions are automatically inherited – i.e. all the subfolders and the files in them inherit the permissions for the parent folder but if you need to set specific permissions for an individual files, you can do it.

There are tonnes of free antivirus applications available on the internet and each of them claims to detect and remove malicious viruses from your computer. Generally, most of these softwares are available for free; but despite their claims to protect your PC, usually they are worthless. Unless you buy premium antivirus applications such kaspersky, Mcafee, ESET, etc, you won’t be 100% sure whether you are being protected by the malicious viruses or not.

However, there is one simple test to verify whether your free anti virus program is upto its mark or not. In this tutorial we will teach you how to create a fake (dummy) virus and then run it on your system to see if your antivirus detects anything or not. Here is what you have to do;

1. Go to Notepad and open it,

2. Copy paste the following code onto your notepad,

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

3. Save the file on the desktop (or any other directory you like) with the file any file name you like, for instance; fakevirus.txt. The file that you have just created is actually an EICAR test file, developed by the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, to test the response of computer antivirus programs.

4. Now re-open the file. If your anti-virus displays a warning sign and closes the text file, then rest assured that it is working fine. Here is what my antivirus – kaspersky – displayed when it detected this file and neutrallized it.

It took Mircrosoft long enough to figure out the compatibility issue of .ISO files (a.k.a. disk image) which persisted in the older versions of Windows. Previously, users had to download a third-party tool to burn .ISO files to DVDs. Gladly, that issue has now been catered for. The upcoming OS system – Windows 7 – detects and supports .ISO files.

With Windows 7 friendly user interface, you can burn tonnes of .ISO files with ease. Here is what you have to do;

Burn .ISO files in Windows 7

Step #1. Insert a blank CD/DVD into your CD/DVD Writer;

Step #2. Right click on the .ISO file and click on the ‘Burn disc image‘ from the drop down menu;

Step #3. A new pop-up window will now appear, if you have more than one CD/DVD drives, choose the appropriate drive from the list.

Step #4. Hit the ‘Burn‘ button when done.

I wonder was it too hard for Microsoft to think of it in the earlier versions of Windows? Was it?!

No doubt YouTube is one of the largest and most widely used video sharing platform on this planet. You can find almost any type of video you want on YouTube. However, sometimes there are instances where you want to skip some part of the video.

For instance if the video is too long or you are interested in only a small part in that video. What would you do? Will you wait for the whole video to load and then watch it? What if the video is 10 minutes long and to make the matters worse you are using a slow dial up connection which takes hell to load the whole video.

Luckily, I have just the solution for you and the best part is that you won’t have to install any software on your system, neither do you have to wait for the whole video to launch. By implementing a small snippet at the end of each videos URL you can jump to the next part of the video instantly. Here’s what you have to do;

Simply add #t=NumberOfSeconds at the end of each URL of Youtube and the play back will start automatically. For instance if you want to skip the first 85 seconds (or 1min and 25sec) of the video, simply append #t=85s or #t=1m25s at the end of the URL and hit enter. The video will start loading from the specified time onwards.

This is what your final URL will look like; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FX_NFOgQEU&feature=related#t=85s

Its a wonderful way to save time and bandwidth. Don’t thank me, thank YouTube!

If you find that you are blocked from your favorite websites, use one of these web proxy sites to get around the block.

The network administrator has to enter all website addresses which he/she wishes to block by hand into the firewall, but with these websites you can unblock any website that was ONCE blocked by the admin of your school or office.

Data carrying devices such as USBs and/or MP3 devices could be very helpful in carrying large chunks of data from one place to another. You can place it in your pocket and carry it anywhere or everywhere you go.

Despite, it usefulness these portable storage devices could easily be affected with harmful viruses, such as Torjan, Spywares, Malwares, etc and even worse is that whenever you plug them back in to your system, the auto run feature will boot up the pen drive automatically, thus infecting your computer by those viruses.

Likewise, Auto run feature in Windows could also prove very annoying. A small window will pop up each time you insert the pen drive into the computer, asking what you would like to do with those files. However, there’s a simpler solution to these problems.

In order to get rid of the Autorun feature in Windows XP, you will have to follow the procedure mentioned below;

1. Go to Start Menu, click on Run;

2. Type “gpedit.msc” (without quotes), and hit Enter,

3. A window will pop up, titled ‘Group Policy‘,

4. Click on ‘Administrative Templates‘ and then inside it, click ‘System‘,

5. On the right side of the pane, you will find an item labeled, ‘Turn off Autoplay‘

6. Double click on that item. A new window will pop out,

7. Under the settings tab, click the ‘Enabled‘ radio button and save changes.

Now you won’t have to worry about either the annoying pop up nor the viruses infecting your computer on USB insertion. This trick will not only help you prevent viruses entering your system, but if you are suspicious you can format your USB pen drive also.

There are moments in your life when you feel very angry at some one, may be because he or she has hurt your feelings or any other reason. If you are in a bad mood and don’t want to face that person and still want to express yourself, you would probably send him/her email, expressing all your angry and telling him how much you hate him/her after that incident.

But once you click that ‘Send‘ button, you realize that you were too hard/rude to that person and wished that you shouldn’t have sent that mail earlier. Moreover there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

Not any more! With Gmail’s Undo feature you can take back everything that you said. With just a push of a ‘Undo’ button (see screen shot), the mail that you sent couple of moments ago can be retrieved back to your inbox!

(Credit: Google)

In the past couple of months, many new features have been added to Gmail, such as Voice and Video feature, Smileys and Gmail themes etc, but Undo Sent is something out of the box. There are so many other instances where this feature can be very helpful, for instance, if you have mistakenly sent an email to the wrong person or you have misspelled something in the context etc. etc.

However, this feature doesn’t come by default, you’ll need to set it yourself manually. In order to activate the Undo Send option;

1. Log-in to your Gmail account

2. Click on “Settings” in Gmail and then the “Labs” tab.

3. You will find the ‘Undo Send’ feature somewhere at the bottom of the page.

4. Enable it and click on ‘Save Changes’.

Voila! Now you won’t have to regret about it any more. But remember that you have only 5 seconds take make the decision, or else that mail will be delivered to its destination and then there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. Although, Gmail have plans to extend this ‘delay time’ to 10 seconds, however nothing can be said about the future at this moment.

What I am going to tell you isn’t rocket science, but I still wonder why people keep on asking this on blogs and forums; even I got several emails from my readers asking me whether there’s a way to check who signed-in to their Gmail account while they were away? Is there any way they could check/verify when and who logged into their accounts?

Yes, there is! There’s no trick and no hack involved. The only ingredient that you’ll need is ‘Attentiveness‘. You’ll see what I mean; here’s is what you have to do;

Note: This post does not help you against hacked accounts. For more tips and tricks, visit.

1. Sign-in to your account,

2. Scroll down and the end of the page,

3. Look for ‘Last account activity‘ as illustrated in the screen shot,

This displays your when you last logged-in to your account. If for instance, you have logged-in after 10 hours or so, while the counter displays something else. You’ll know some one else has signed-in while you were away.

4. If you want more details such as, Date & Time, IP Address, and browser information; simply click on the ‘details‘ link.

If you look at the screen shot above, you’ll notice that Google keeps track of all the necessary information. If you find any thing suspicious going on, change your password as soon as possible before matters get even worse.

Drop a comment to share your views about this procedure.

Recently, we have covered a few tips on how to associate a shortcut key to an application in Windows and similarly to your favorite browser. Associating shortcut keys can be very helpful as it save you a lot of your precious time and work.

Today, we’ll share some more useful tips regarding Windows that hopefully will prove very useful for your future reference.

First up, how to maximize or minimize a window using keyboard shortcuts?

1. In order to minimize an active window, use any of these two combinations; WindowsKey+M and/or WindowsKey+D. Please note, with WindowsKey+D combination you can also restore/maximize the last active Window.

2. For Maximizing the window, use the following; WindowsKey+SHIFT+M. This will maximize the previously minimized window.

3. Sometimes when you open any window, it might not stretch to the full size of your monitor’s screen. Now to tackle this, use – ALT+SPACEBAR+X. Your active window will now fit inside the whole screen.

4. If you have more than one Window opened at any given time, using ALT+TAB key combination will allow you to switch between Windows.

5. In the end, if you would like to close the active window, press ALT+SPACEBAR+C – in order to close it.

Have you used any of these keys before? Do you think they are useful? Share you views with us.

You should get Panic – a Firefox add-on, installed on your system, in order to prevent your self from embarrassing situations in front of others. Panic is an excellent Firefox add-on that it designed for these occasions.

Consider that you are in your office and you see your boss approaching towards your desk, with just a press of a keyboard shortcut, you can hide your activity, thus giving your boss an impression that you weren’t wasting your time in the office.

Even better is that you can set Panic to replace all open tabs with a single work-related website like your company’s intranet homepage or any other web page. This way your boss or any of your office colleagues will never know what your were doing! Nifty huh?
