Cheap Tablets are Soon to Be a Big Hit

The technological gap between a device such as an Samsung Exhibit 4G Android phone and the iPad 2 is getting smaller and smaller by the day. It’s this space between smartphones and mainstream tablets that some technology leaders are seeing an opportunity to turn a profit. Starting with the Amazon Fire Kindle, companies are increasingly finding niches in the mobile tech market that are mostly dug out as a result of economical consumers, cheap hardware, and open source software.

Rumors that Apple is considering coming out with an “iPad mini” only cement suspicions that the market is going to soon be headed toward the gray area between phone and mainstream tablet.

Consider, for example, the fact that the Indian government has managed to manufacture a $50 tablet that they will sell to low-income students and families for $25-$35. Upon demonstration, it’s clear that this $50 tablet is no iPad or even a Fire Kindle. But it’s shockingly close considering the low ball price tag. Add an extra $100 worth of improved hardware and more sophisticated software, and you could conceivably manufacture a worthy competitor of anything on the market today for $50 cheaper than what the cheapest tablet is currently going for.

Companies such as Kobo are paying attention to the issue of size. While the iPad promotes itself as the ideal form of mobile computing, in reality the size of high-end tablets keeps them from being truly mobile. You can’t throw an iPad 2 into your average purse, for example. You have to carry it around in a folio, which isn’t suitable for everyone who otherwise find themselves attracted to the idea of a tablet. Creating tablets that sit in a sweet spot of size between the current iPad and the iPhone 4S, is a good framework for capturing an untapped market of tablet buyers.

With that said, cheapness will rely in part on access to economic platforms such as Android. In exchange for the inexpensive software, customers won’t have the optimized-to-the-max experience they’d otherwise be getting if they purchased an iPad. Instead, users of these discount tablets will have to settle for a more homelier interface and lowered expectations in terms of revolutionary capability.

But if makers of these new mini-tablets can manage to provide the basics: web-surfing, emailing, video watching, gameplay, and personal finance, then there’s no doubt they’ll have folks ready to buy their products

Apple Officially Unveiled Details about iPhone OS 3.0 Software

As scheduled, Apple finally unveiled its iPhone OS 3.0 software with loads of new features and several improvements that should have been made a long time ago. But as the saying goes, better late than never. The new update has come up with several new features that the iPhone fans have long awaited.

The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release includes an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,000 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including In-App Purchases; Peer-to-Peer connections; an app interface for accessories; access to the iPod(R) music library; a new Maps API and Push Notifications.

Some of the major features that are available in this updates are as follows:

Copy and paste. Finally!
MMS (on iPhone 3G, not on 2G)
Stereo Bluetooth
Landscape mode in Mail, SMS and Notes.
Push Notifications
Record, edit and send voice memos via email or MMS.
Extended search (spotlight)
Tether capability
Send multiple photos at a time.
Turn-by-turn navigation: apps must provide their own maps

iPhone firmware 3.0 will be available this summer. It will be available for free to iPhone 3G customers and will also work on 1st generation iPhone as well. iPhone customers will be able to download the new iPhone OS 3.0 software and iPod touch customers will be able to purchase a software update for $9.95 (US).

Great news for Mac OS X users. If you are a torrent lover and love to download music, videos and applications from the web using Torrents, but were restricted to use it on your Mac operating system. Now with Torrent Dam you can download all your torrents right from your Mac desktop!

TorrentDam, a brand-new public tracker metasearch tool. It’s free, it’s tiny, and it’s open source! TorrentDam allows users to search up to 7 different popular public trackers, including Mininova, ThePirateBay, IsoHunt & Demonoid.

TorrentDam is a bittorrent search engine tool. It isn’t a search engine itself; it doesn’t in and of itself keep track of bittorrent files.

To use TorrentDam, just start it up. You’ll see a little window for you to input your search terms. Below that is a little sidebar that shows each of the search engines. By default, all are checked. To use the ones you want, simply de-select the ones you have no interest in.

Apple to Preview iPhone OS 3 Details Coming March 17th

Yes, you heard it; in the upcoming week, Apple is planning for holding an event for iPhone 3.0 OS dated March 17th. Many rumors are floating all over the web as to what will be included in the update.

Although, no one is dead sure and awaits desperately for March 17th to arrive, still there are some expected or partially confirmed features that will be available in iPhone 3.0 OS, for instance there are rumors that it will have MMS (Multimedia Support), a shared Sandbox which builds a shared data area that apps can drop “public” files into, better power management, enhanced home screen customization.

It has also been rumored that Tethering via Bluetooth and USB will also be made available in the upcoming update. In addition to this, there are also rumours that Apple will be adding a copy paste feature which has been one of the most demanding feature by the iPhone fans and is expected to be seen in this edition.

Apple is really behind in the game of picture messaging and the ability to copy-and-paste would turn the iPhone into a true Kindle killer. No information on the OS is available at this point, but we are expecting to hear quite a bit about it at a March 17 press event. We speculate that this will undoubtedly be a wonderful day for iPhone lovers and developers alike.

This version includes the new Nitro engine for rendering Web pages, making it highly efficient and super fast when it comes to loading pages, no wonder why the company claims it to be the fastest browser ever developed.

In addition for being the fastest browser in the world, Apple also claims that it renders JavaScript at an astonishing speed, when compared with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox, it renders pages 30 times faster than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 and three times faster than Mozilla’s Firefox 3.

Send Free Picture Messages Right From your iPhone with Flutter

I have seen many of my iPhone 3G friends who feel disappointed and greatly purturbed when they see that Apple has not included any picture messaging feature in iPhone 3G.

I understand how bad it feels, but with Flutter around, you don’t need to worry much. With Flutter you can send unlimited picture messages and geo-tagged location to most mobile phones in the world.

Flutter brings you the following features:

Your message can (optionally) include a link to your location pinned on Google Maps.
Friends can view your pictures and location right on their cell phones.
Send picture messages from your iPhone.

Flutter gives you the leverage to attach pictures right from your album or take a new picture and send it to any number in your contact book. You also have the option to send your co-ordinates/location to the person you are sending those pictures, so that he may know from where you have taken them.

The only drawback that I found with this application is that the link that you provide takes the recipient to its parent site; JuiceCaster and it is here your image is being hosted. This means that the number that the recipient sees is not that of senders, but one generated by JuiceCaster.

Although this service is absolutely free of charge, but be careful that your friend or the person downloading that image will be charged (MMS cost) for each kilobyte he downloads.

Apple’s Latest iPhone 2.2 OS Update, Now Available

As previously blogged about iPhones OS 2.2 firmware, that was expected to be released by 21 November, is now available for download.

Several new features have been added to this update. Some of the highlights of the update focus on GPS and Google Maps, which now includes Google Street View, allowing a user to see a 360-degree view of locations taken with cameras mounted on Google’s cars.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Coming In Less Than a week?

According to the guys at iPhone Hellas, the Apple iPhone OS 2.2 firmware update will be available to iPhoners sooner than expected. It has been rumored that Apple plans to release the iPhone OS 2.2 on November 21, 2008.

According to a translated version of iPhone Hellas, some of the added features in the 2.2 update, which includes:

461 Japanese emoji icons

The ability to turn auto-correction on and off

New look for the Safari with the Google search bar now occupying its own space on the title bar

Download podcasts wirelessly

The Line-in audio is activated and can be used through the headphone jack

New language support

Google Street View, Google Transit information – Routes public transport, Walking directions, Location sharing.

iTunes 8 for Windows and Mac

After a long wait by Apple fans, Apple has recently released iTunes 8.0 for Mac and Windows users side by side with new iPods.

As for those who do not know what iTunes is; it is a free digital media player application, designed by Apple for playing and organizing digital music and video files.

The iTunes Music Store offers Windows users the same online music store as Mac users, with the same music catalog.

Two of the biggest new features in iTunes 8, which is available now for Windows and Mac, are:

Song recommendations
HD TV shows

It also has an improved interface with added features such as Album Art Grid view, plus new smart sidebars called Genius. iTunes have also added enhanced accessibility and new visualizers.

Apple releases New Generation iPods

Two weeks back I posted an article in which Kevin Rose blogged that the New Generation of iPods, namely, “The iPod Nano 4th Generation”, will be coming soon.

This has finally been confirmed as Steve Jobs from Apple announces the new iPod Nano 4th Gen and the new iPod Touch 2nd Gen and followed by a preview of iTunes 8.

The new iPod Nano 4th Gen is the thinnest iPod (around 0.24-inch thick) having a sleek and elegant new design which is beautifully merged with a spectacular 2-inch LCD (320×240 pixels).

The 4th Gen iPod Nano incorporates a new user interface with high-resolution portrait display, a voice recorder and a built-in accelerometer. Although the size of the Center button is unchanged, but still its Click Wheel looks slightly larger than its predecessor’s. Its battery supports up to 24 hours of music playback or up to 4 hours of video playback on a single charge.

It comes in nine brilliant colors including silver, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, RED and black and a new gorgeous curved aluminum and glass enclosure, making a movie experience even more fantastic.

If you want to make you music experience even more fun, then go and get one of these stylish iPods. The 8GB version will cost you $150 while the 16GB one for $199.
