How To Crack a Password in Windows with Ophcrack Live CD

Its not that hard to forget a Windows admin password. It can happen to anyone especially those who constantly change passwords or haven’t used their computer for a long time. Although there is one useful way to recover your password by creating a Windows password reset disk. However, if you don’t prefer that method, there is another simple method to crack your password by using a Ophcrack LiveCD that claims to have cracked 99.9% alpha-numeric passwords, but that’s always not the case!

In this tutorial I will teach you a step by step procedure on how to create a Live CD and then use it to Crack a Password.

Step #1: First of all you’ll have to download Ophcrack. Once the Live CD ISO is downloaded, you’ll need to burn it on a Blank Disk. Burn the Disk at a low burning speed.

Step #2: Now when ever you forget or lose your Admin Password. On system restart, insert the Burned Disk onto your CD/DVD ROM. Make sure you have set the boot sequence to CD first. If not go to BIOS and set the boot sequence accordingly.If every thing works, you should see a loading screen like the one below,

Step #3: Once the Live CD loads it will automatically start working on the password, using rainbow tables and some pre-calculated data stored in memory (More on Rainbow Tables here) it will crack the password depending upon the length and complexity. For average passwords of length 6-10 letters it can take up to 3-7 minutes. In case you have more than one account, you will have to choose from a list of accounts.

Step #4: Note down the cracked password once its displayed; remove the Live CD from the CD/DVD ROM and restart your computer. Type in the password that you noted in step #3 and enter at log-in. Once you are successfully logged inside, DON’T FORGET to change the password and note down the new password for future references.

Using Ophcrack is a very useful if you have simple and short alphanumeric. However, it does not crack strong passwords. Ophcrack Live CD can really help those who forget passwords on regular basis.

Partition USB Flash Drive with Lexar USB Format

I always wanted to create a partition on one of my usb drives, so that I could easily sort out my files and place them accordingly in different categories. The only problem with this idea is that Windows does not allow users to create a separate partition on USB drives as they are cataloged under ‘Removable Media‘.

However, Lexar’s USB format is an excellent portable tool which was initially designed for Lexar USB’s only, but because of increase in demand now works side by side with other USB drives.

The main window of the application provides you an easy interface, which not only helps you in Flipping the removable bit, but you can also use this tool to format your USB drive, make it bootable or set a volume label when ever needed. In order to create a partition all you have to do it to click on the Flip Removable Bit button, as seen in the screenshot below.

How To Add Tabs to Windows Explorer

Among the most useful features of Firefox, IE7, Opera, etc are their ability to open new web pages inside new tabs, which not only saves system resources but also enables users to easily shift between multiple tabs using the CTRL+TAB key. Make sure you check other useful Windows keyboard shortcuts.

But have you ever thought of adding tabs to your Windows Explorer? Perhaps not. Now with QTTabBar – an easy to use tool that allow users to add tabs to Windows Explorer; meaning that you can open folders in the same way you open web pages in Firefox or IE7.

This tool will help you save space on your taskbar. It also lets you add a drop-down preview as seen in the screen-shot above and a few toolbar buttons that add entries like “Recently Closed” or favorites. There is another additional feature which lets users to set password to any folder they want, giving them more security. In order to set a password all you have to do is Right-click on the tab and choose ‘Set Password‘. Next time you click on that folder you’ll have to provide a password in order to pass through.

Installation is also very easy and simple; download the zip file, unzip it and execute RegisterQTTabBar.exe file. Restart the computer and log back in to use the utility. For those who are using Windows XP, make sure Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or 3.0 is installed on your computer or download from here.

AppLocker: Block Access to Application in Windows

Chances are that if you have a large circle of friends and you have also given them the privilege to access your computer, you might one day become a victim of content theft. Its true that you can’t trust all your friends or cousins, especially if they haven’t been with you for a long time.

The best option that I would suggest users is to set a password on Windows. This will not only prevent your family members from accessing your private files, but it will also prevent your friends from sneaking into your computer/laptop while you are away. However, if you are among those users who are hesitant of creating a password just because you’ll forget it in the near future here’s a how you can recover lost passwords in Windows.

Regardless to that, if you still want to block your friends from accessing some application, Applocker is just the right tool that will do wonders! Basically, Applocker is a free, lightweight utility that prevents unauthorized access to certain applications that comes by default in Windows. For instance, you have the leverage to block apps including, Notepad, Calculator, MS Office programs, Internet Explorer, etc.

All of these and other similar options are available on the main window of Applocker. All you have to do it to check those applications that you want to block/lock and then hit the ‘Save’ button when finished. In addition to that, you can add as many application that you want to block/lock. For this click on the Configure button from the main window. Add any application by typing its caption and .exe file name. For example, if you want to block FireFox, simply name the caption ‘Mozilla Firefox‘ and then type the firefox.exe file name. Click the add button when finished.

So when ever any one would click on the application, a message will be displayed prompting the user to contact the admin. AppLocker works with Windows 2K, XP, Server 2003 and Server 2008.

The only downside to this application is that Applocker does not provide any security mechanism to prevent users from accessing the application itself. Any one can easily open Applocker and simply uncheck the applications from the list to use it. Not so clever after all! [Via]

This is a must have tool that enables users to safely turn off those services which are not performing any useful task, thus allowing it to fine tune and speedup systems performance. In addition to this, it also provides services like, Automatic and Manual Tune Ups, System Diagnostics, Services Test, System Restore feature, to name a few.

Once you click on the Services Diagnostics button inside the application, it will display a list of active programs and will suggest services/programs that can safely be turned off, without effecting system’s stability.

One of the most admiring feature is that it allows users to either perform a manual tune-up that lets them select from a more detailed list of features that they want to disable or choose automatic tune-up that automatically tunes up the system based on what is suitable for it.

Users can undo any changes that have been made by the Vista System Optimizer by simply going to Windows Vista Optimizer’s Rescue Center, this will bring the system to the default, unoptimized state that previously it was on. Above all, this application is free of charge but works for Windows Vista only. However, you’ll need to download .NET Framework in order to run it.
