WordPress is one of the widely used and most lovable open source blog publishing application (CMS) ever created. Originally designed for blogging but is so powerful and popular that it is being used by many business websites. Due to its popularity, you’ll find a large number of free and premium wordpress themes created by creative and innovative designers.

While most of the designers who create excellent, premium wordpress themes, manage and publish their themes on their own blogs/websites; there is still a large number of designer who are willing to publish their work all for free to the general public. Generally these designers do this to promote their own blog, thus enabling them to rank higher in Google’s and Yahoo’s SERPs.

Promoting your free wordpress theme is not as simple. There are tons of free wordpress theme directories who are willing to take/publish your wordpress theme(s). However, most of theme are out-dated or obsolete, meaning that either they don’t accept/publish fresh wordpress themes or it take months for the theme to appear on their homepages.

Great news for all those wordpress iPhone fans who have been waiting for the new version can finally call it a day, since the latest version of WordPress for iPhone and iPod touch has been officially released and is now available for download at iTunes App store.

Users had a lot of expectations from newer version since the old version of WordPress for iPhone had several bugs that gladly have been fixed and additional features have been added to the list.

Some of the key features that have been added to this version, includes landscape mode, enabling writers to type in their blog’s post in extra-wide version of the keyboard, instead of the previous portrait mode that posed a lot difficulties while writing long posts.

Other features that are included in this release are as follow;

Support for editing and creating pages
Photo resizing options
Comment moderation
Link creation help
Asynchronous publishing

Easily Setup WordPress Locally on Windows XP – How To

Blogging being a new hype for running business now-a-days, every one is trying to find new ways to have online presence or to earn some decent amount of money through online advertising. Even those who have some creativity are choosing blogging as among the easiest platform to work online and earn money from it.

Blogging is getting easier as new ways are coming for user friendly blogging experience along with new CMS (Content Management System) for different needs and types of blogging.

This tutorial is about Installing a CMS locally on Windows XP. The process is same for many of the CMS. Therefore, I have decided to teach you on how to install WordPress. This will particularly come in handy while design and testing themes for your blogs.

Important Note: CMS need a webserver MySQL or PHP to run, locally this function is done by XAMP Lite. Xamp is a local server easy to setup, easy to run, easy to tweak. It is so easy that you will install you own wordpress or CMS locally with in 10 minutes!

Here is how its done;

1. Grab XAMP Lite (for Windows) and Install it in “C:\” Drive

2. Browse and goto C:\xampplite double click setup_xampp or setup_xampp.bat

3. Once done, double click xampp-control.exe and click on start the Apache and MySQL services.

Note: Certain errors can resist and service may not start. One error may be about MySQL or apache is busy. In order to solve this issue, go to Start -> Run -> and type cmd a command line interface will open, there type iisreset / stop after 3 sec the service will be stopped, then try to start that service again. (or get more info on this here).

4. Now open your browser (may it be Firefox, I.E, Safari, Opera or any other) and enter this address in the address bar: http://localhost/. From the menu on the left column, choose your preferred language. Although english is set by default if the language on your system is in English language.

5. Now that the interface displays a language that you can understand, click on phpMyAdmin (on the left column once again)

6. Enter “wordpress” (without quotes) in the “Create New Database” Field, and select utf8_unicode_ci in the drop down box in the next field (as shown in the picture below). Click on Create. The Xampp setup is now complete.

It is needed by wordpress CMS, for certain other CMS or another wordpress installation, you can name it as you like, simply mention it as it is while in installation process.

7. Download WordPress and unzip it under “c:\xampplite\htdocs“.

8. Now we have a wordpress folder in c:\xampplite\htdocs. Browse and go to the folder, and you will see a file named “wp-config-sample.php“. Open it in your favorite text editor and replace the default values with the ones you see below. Save the file and change the name into “wp-config.php” (without quotes). Note we have removed the “-sample” in the file name.

define(‘DB_USER’, ‘root’); // Your MySQL username
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ”); // …and password (needs to be empty, just for local install)

9. Open browser and goto http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php .Follow the instructions as illustrated while installation of wordpress. In the end you will be provided with a password. Note it down some where safe; you can later change this password from the settings menu inside WordPress.

10. Now in the end if you want to access wordpress locally, active the program i.e. XAMP Lite. Open your browser, type the following: ” http://localhost/wp-admin/index.php”. You will now be inside your wordpress dashboard.

Keep Your Blog Secure By Hiding Your WordPress Version Number | How To

As you have already come to know what I will be discussing with you today. Keeping your blog safe from hackers is a very essential task. Although professional hackers can hack into anything, but at least you can prevent your blog from amateur hackers.

The best thing to do is to hide your blog’s version number, since a hacker will look at it first and then device a method against your blog. It’s a lot easier to hack previous or old versions of your blog. So keep in mind to update your blog as soon as the update is made available.

Never the less, here is an even better method to prevent hackers from knowing your blog’s version in the first place. If you are using WordPress version 2.5 or older, simply navigate to your header.php file and remove this line,

In case you are using the latest version that is greater than 2.5, then you won’t find this line, because it is generated from the WordPress Core Engine. Therefore, the best thing to do is to install a plug-in, that can be download from here.

Note: Although, this trick is not necessary but its best to take extra precautions, as the saying goes ‘Prevention is better than Cure’.

Increase Feed Readers with ‘What Would Seth Godin Do WordPress Plugin’

Every blogger dreams of having a high feed count, but not everyone is successful in luring their visitors to become a part of their blog.

People use all sorts of methods to attract their visitors to subscribe to their blog’s feed. Some give free e-books and a few hold contests to force their readers to subscribe.

One of the better methods that I personally have found is to request your reader, rather than to force him/her. Since its his/her choice whether he or she wants to become a part of your blog or not.

Here is one very nice and useful Seth Godin do plug-in that could help increase your blogs’ subscribers. Seth Godin do plug-in displays a message for first time to only new visitors requesting them to subscribe to your blog’s feed.

Installing this plug-in is also very simple. First of all Download the plug-in from here, then upload the what_would_seth_godin_do.php file to your plug-ins folder and activate it from your dashboard.

When you are done, you can change the settings according to your needs. By default, it will display a small box above each post containing the words ‘If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!”. It even gives you the option to change the message, its location on your post and its life span.

WordPress 2.7 Officially Released!

The new version of WordPress 2.7, which we were covering for the past few months, despite rumors has finally been released a day before.

It has been under development for the several months, and has come with several new features, including tons of enhancement in the admin area.

One of the major improvements has been done is in sites navigation features that have been moved towards the sidebar, where users can expand or collapse the sections. Now you wont have to wait for the page to reload after clicking the link. Take a look.

The only draw back with the sidebar navigation is that it takes more space on your screen giving you less time for writing and managing your blog.

By now you already know about the release of WordPress 2.7 Beta 3 and the changes that it has been undergoing for about some time now.

They have modified the dashboard, which gives a very fresh and exciting look. apart from these style improvements, a total of 160 changes have been made, altogether.
